Energy Healing ABCs - by Migdalia Rodriguez

What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient healing art that has been around for centuries. The Usui/Tibetan lineage of Reiki was developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui, a Japanese monk.  During his lifetime, he taught over 2,000 people the healing form. The practice spread to the U.S. through Hawaii in the 1940s.

During a Reiki session, a client is fully clothed on a massage table or chair. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs and torso using different hand shapes for 2-5 minutes.  When there’s pain or a specific injury, the hands may be held just above the area. While the practitioner holds hands over the body, there is a transfer of energy. The energy may feel warm and tingly. Each position is held until the practitioner senses the energy has stopped flowing.  Reiki can also be done at a distance.

Improving the flow of energy of the energetic bodies especially the physical can enable relaxation, reduce pain, lead to feeling balanced and reignite the body’s ability to heal itself. Reiki’s impact is so powerful, and it’s become so popular that it is now being offered as part of treatment in healthcare. According to the Center for Reiki Research, it is now being offered in over 75 hospitals or clinics.

What is Shamanic Reiki?

Shamanic Reiki is a healing modality that combines Reiki healing touch with shamanic journeying to guide clients in working through experiences they are challenged by. This modality is a more interactive healing experience that assists clients in exploring and identifying the root causes of distress and can facilitate the release of energetically trapped emotions so they can find peace and live in balance.

During a session, the client can be on a treatment table, laying on a yoga mat or sitting in a comfortable position. The practitioner utilizes shamanic tools to guide the client on a journey to retrieve answers or tools, connect with their spirit guides or higher self and shift energy blocks. While the journey is taking place, the practitioner is also using Reiki healing touch and/or intention to facilitate the healing. Some shamanic tools that can be used are crystals, flowers, stones or oracle cards.

Shamanic Reiki healing can be done virtually and in what is referred to as “absentee” sessions. In a virtual session, it is facilitated using technology to guide the client and intention extend healing energy at a distance. In absentee sessions, it will be necessary for you to send the practitioner some items, the practitioner will journey on your behalf, send distance reiki and then share the intuitive information that was accessed during the session. There is a follow up ceremony the client will be instructed to do in order to release and receive closure. Absentee healing is a multiple step process that may take a couple of weeks to complete.

What is distance healing?

Energy and spirit transcend location, time and space so you can do distance healing that does not require face to face contact. In this type of session, the practitioner connects to the energy of the client from a distance and the healing work is conducted. The practitioner utilizes intention to extend healing energy and project love to the client wherever they may be. There is no limit to how far apart client and practitioner are. The client may choose to relax during the time the distance session is taking place but that is not necessary. Reflection, meditation and journaling will be encouraged in order to assist the client in integrating the energy healing.

What does holistic mean?

Holistic means "of the whole" and to be whole, you have to consider the different aspects of the energy system which create the human experience, including your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. Most energy healing modalities utilize this approach in helping clients to reignite their ability to heal and restore wellness.

What are chakras?

In many holistic healing modalities, there is a focus on the chakra system and energy anatomy. The word “chakra” means spinning wheel and the chakra model demonstrates how life force energy circulates between our physical and energetic bodies. The chakras keep us healthy and in balance with the world around us. For better understanding, the chakras are shown in respect to the position along the spine however they are not physical structures. Their location is just a reference to where the subtle energy may manifest in our physical body. There are 7 major chakra centers: root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. They’re normally addressed in order from the root which is located at the base of the spine up to the crown which is located above the top of the head. Each chakra has its own function and purpose but they are interconnected and when there’s an imbalance in one, it can affect the others.
